ImageI can’t take credit for the entirety of this article … because I was instructed to use a previous press release as a starting point … but nonetheless my aim here was to introduce the second-newest sister company of Dragonfly Expeditions – a cruise line ON SAILBOATS! Interested in taking a cruise? Please let me know 🙂

Captain Mike Burke established Windjammer Barefoot Cruises over 60 years ago. For landlubbers everywhere, he offered a world of rekindled childhood, the spirit of carefree pirates, and the experience of sailing on a tall ship. The world of Windjammer Barefoot Cruises consisted of rescued schooners, salt spray, turquoise Caribbean seas, pristine anchorages, far-flung ports, and of course bare feet. But dreams are fragile things, and in September 2007, this Captain’s dream was on its way to Davy Jones’ locker. Windjammer Barefoot Cruises went bankrupt, its remaining assets were auctioned off, and all who were a part of that world mourned.

ImageBut the unique world of Windjammer never really died. Yes, the company went bankrupt and some of the ships were lost. But the islands and ports still beckoned with a promise of fond reunions and tropical adventures. Tens of thousands of passengers waited and hoped for their next cruise. Windjammer did not die because it was more than a company; it was a culture. And thanks to a few devoted individuals right here in Miami, that culture is making a comeback.

In January 2012, with the purchase of the magnificent SV Mandalay, Windjammer Sailing Adventures was born. They are not trying to replicate the original company, but are still choosing to honor the legacy of Captain Mike Burke. Original Windjammer pictures, furniture, and memorabilia decorate the company headquarters. The successors of the original company are committed to making someone else’s dream their own and to revive a world that many believed was lost. The creators of this new company are excited for great years to come!

Although the new Windjammer cruises honor traditions from the original company, including Rum Swizzles, crab races, story time, sleeping on deck, and playing “Amazing Grace,” they have also made their own improvements and offer new, exciting surprises on every cruise. Windjammer Sailing Adventures’ office is located next to her sister company, Dragonfly Expeditions, in the historic Biltmore Hotel, but the Mandalay makes her berth in Grenada, where she has easy access to fair winds that push her into new, uncharted territories.

Windjammer Sailing Adventures offers a distinct contrast to the rapid pace of daily life. For all of those waiting on shore and for those who missed the excitement the first time around, don’t worry, now is your chance to set sail. And this winter is the perfect time because Windjammer Sailing Adventures is offering a special: sail for a week anytime between October 28th and January 6th for only $1,200 per person. This promises to be an experience of a lifetime that you don’t want to miss! It’s time to join the energetic, salty crew of the Mandalay, hoist your flag, and prepare to set sail. Visit the company website or Facebook page for more details.
